I’ve been experimenting with different growth oils for more than 15 years. My goal has always been to achieve luscious, voluminous, healthy tresses, and I would try just about everything (including my own homemade concoctions) to get there. I quickly learned that this process wouldn’t be easy, though, and I’d have to be open to trial and error—and have patience (sigh).
With that said, I’ve tried nearly 30 hair growth oils over the last decade-plus, including formulas with all the buzzy viral ingredients, but only four actually had noticeable results. Shop my four go-to hair oils that grew my hair in four weeks, below.
4 Editor-Loved Hair Growth Oils
Tropical Isle Living Strong Roots Red Pimento Hair Growth Oil
My most used and recommended hair growth oil currently is Tropical Isle Living Strong Roots Red Pimento Hair Growth Oil. It grew my hair so fast that I had to stop using it because I couldn’t keep up with the maintenance. I now use it bi-weekly for hot oil treatments, and my strands have never felt more nourished. It features pimento berry, which is rich in antioxidants and removes impurities from the scalp that may slow down growth.
Aunt Jackie’s Elixir Essentials Hair and Scalp Oil
My next most-used hair oil is Aunt Jackie’s Elixir Essentials Hair and Scalp Oil. I prefer to use this to combat shedding in between styling. It’s formulated with rosemary that repairs fragile strands, while also being an anti-inflammatory that reduces dandruff and skin irritation on the scalp. It also includes biotin, which thickens and stops excess shedding. Plus, it contains mint, which leaves a cool sensation on the scalp that soothes after tight hair styling.
As I Am Rosemary Hair Oil
As I Am’s Rosemary Hair Oil saved my edges, specifically when they had fallen out due to too-tight hairstyles. After I stopped re-tightening my hair so frequently and, instead, started to apply this growth oil to my perimeter three times a week, my edges started sprouting new strands. Its star ingredient, rosemary, improves blood circulation to the scalp, stimulates growth, and reduces breakage. It also contains peppermint oil to soothe the scalp, thicken, and prevent hair loss. It’s made for all hair types and can be applied directly to the scalp—no diluting needed.
Kate Blanc Cosmetics Castor Oil
Before I loc’d my hair, I swore by Kate Blanc’s Cosmetics Castor Oil for growing back bald patches. While I’m using Tropical Isle Living for my tresses these days, I still use Kate Blanc’s oil to thicken my brows and lengthen my barely-there lashes. It features pure, organic, cold-pressed castor oil that promotes hair growth while also hydrating and soothing the scalp. It comes with a spoolie for shimmying through the lashes as well as a dropper for targeted application. Genius!
