There is nothing quite like having trick-or-treaters run up to the door to find your festively dressed pet greeting them by the candy bowl. To extend the Halloween festivities to your pets, consider making them a unique DIY costume. All of our costumes involve inventive and unique ways of stitching or gluing together materials that you most likely already have at home or can easily pick up at the store.
Here we share all our favorite pet costume ideas so you can have a trick-or-treat-worthy furry friend by your side this Halloween.
A costume should not impede your pet’s ability to breathe, walk, lie down, or function safely and comfortably. If your pet shows any negative reactions to their costume, such as biting, hiding, or signs of stress, take it off right away—and opt for a festive collar or bandana instead.
Dinosaur
Our no-sew dinosaur canine costume comes together quickly with our template, a green T-shirt, and some felt. Trace the slits on felt material and cut out the design. Then, cut the slits on a green kid-sized tank top and insert the pre-cut felt into the slits by pulling them through. Done!
Bat Wings
If your pet is not as comfortable wearing costumes that cover a majority of their body, consider making our bat wings pet costume. This costume is made by stitching and gluing the felt wings into your pet’s favorite harness. This makes it easy to take on and off your pet and a cute accessory for walking around the neighborhood while the kids are trick-or-treating.
Flower Petal
Turning your pet into a pet-tunia is an original Martha Stewart pet costume that’s been a favorite for years. The costume requires a sewing machine for speedy results, but it can be hand sewn as well. Printing out our sunflower template in advance makes this an easy at-home project to dress up your pet in a not-so-spooky fun ensemble.
Spider
If you are looking for a fun challenge, try creating our spider-dog pet costume. All the templates you will need for cutting out the felt shapes are included in our guide. This ensemble is a bit more time-consuming than the others due to the stuffing element and hand-stitching the pieces together onto a dog-fitted T-shirt–but it surely is cute.
Clown
Using a 6-inch roll of colored tulle, red card stock, and pom-poms, you can easily transform your cat into a furry, friendly clown. You can use an elastic to hold down the party hat on your pet or attach it to their collar if they tend to be bothered by other pet clothes or costumes close to their face.
Pumpkin
If you’re looking for a sewing project this Halloween season, then look no further than the pumpkin pet costume Martha made years ago on The Martha Stewart Show. This costume comes together with two T-shirts and some creative sewing.
Moth
If you’re dressing up as Motha from her iconic 2011 costume this Halloween, then your pet might as well, too. With basic sewing supplies, pipe cleaners, and black, gray, and pale yellow felt, you and your pet can be an iconic duo just like our founder during your Halloween festivities this year.
