Sharing the same zodiac sign with someone doesn’t automatically mean you’ll have a ton of similar traits. In fact, you could say that October Scorpios and November Scorpios might as well be two different breeds of stinger-slinging arachnids.
While many Scorpios will share some core qualities — like being intuitive, loyal, mysterious, and passionate — they may express themselves, conduct relationships, chase after goals, and show their emotions very differently. According to astrologer Letao Wang, an astrologer and spiritual counselor, part of that is due to zodiac cusps.
October Scorpios are born right after Libra season, which means they might share some traits in common with the charming air sign. Meanwhile, mid-November Scorpios are creeping in on the sign Sagittarius, which could explain why they’re a little more fiery.
There’s always a big emphasis on sun signs, but there’s so much more to your birth chart than that. So, while almost everyone born between Oct. 23 and Nov. 21 will be a Scorpio sun, their moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and rising zodiac signs could vary wildly and impact how they think, feel, and act. From there — as it goes with astrology — the explanation goes even deeper.
Decoding October Vs. November Scorpios
Each of the 12 zodiac signs takes up exactly 30 degrees on the zodiac wheel, and each sign is divided into three decans, representing a ten-degree segment. The first 10 degrees or 10 days of a sign make up the first decan, the second 10 degrees the second decan, and the final 10 degrees are the third decan. While all Scorpios are ruled by Pluto and Mars, each decan also has its own co-ruling planet that imbues it with a unique energy.
According to Wang, the first Scorpio decan spans Oct. 23 to Nov. 1 and is double-ruled by Pluto as the modern ruler and Mars as the traditional ruler, which emphasizes traits like transformation, action, and emotional depth.
The second decan from Nov. 2 to Nov. 11 is co-ruled by Neptune, infusing a mystical and dreamy quality. Finally, the third decan, from Nov. 12 to Nov. 21, is co-ruled by the moon, which enhances emotional awareness and sensitivity.
With decans and cusps as the foundation, exploring some astrological differences between October Scorpios and November Scorpios will allow you to understand this fixed water sign even better.
1. October Scorpios Have Intense Vibes
Scorpio’s ruling planet is the small but mighty Pluto, aka the planet of transformation, along with the action-oriented Mars. Because October-born Scorpios are double-ruled by Pluto and Mars, they tend to embody the most notorious Scorpio strengths and weaknesses. These include being deeply intuitive, transformational, powerful, truth-seeking, secretive, controlling, and feeling easily betrayed.
2. November Scorpios Are Highly Spiritual
November Scorpios are almost all second or third-decan Scorpios, meaning they’re either co-ruled by Neptune, the planet of illusions, or co-ruled by the moon, which governs emotions. Both of these celestial bodies bring a dreamy, mystical, and sentimental influence to November Scorpio’s energy, enhancing their natural psychic power.
It’s why these Scorpios might find that they’re even more spiritually attuned and drawn to occult practices than October Scorpios. In other words? Don’t be surprised if you see a November Scorpio pulling out an Ouija board.
3. October Scorpios Are More Competitive
First decan Scorpios have that double Pluto and power-hungry Mars energy in their chart, which enhances their naturally competitive — and sometimes cutthroat — nature. “The strong influence of Pluto during their decan endows them with a relentless drive to achieve their goals, regardless of obstacles,” says Wang.
Meanwhile, Mars means they’ll let no one stand in their way. You’ll never know when a Scorpio is being competitive because they won’t make it obvious. An October Scorpio will turn on that Libra cusp charm to get what they want, and they’ll also use their mystical Pluto energy to their advantage.
4. November Scorpios Are More Emotional (And Yes, Moody)
As one of the three water signs of the zodiac, Scorpios are naturally sensitive people who are driven by their feelings, even if they don’t always show it. But because about half of November-born Scorpios are co-ruled by the moon — the sentimental celestial body that governs moods — they tend to be even more affected by their larger-than-life emotions.
These intuitive, empathetic third decan Scorpios easily sense other people’s temperaments, but some might also have trouble holding in their thoughts. Add in the fact they’re getting closer to freedom-loving, truth-telling Sagittarius, and they might tend to say exactly how they feel.
5. October Scorpios Are Way More Jealous
Since October Scorpios intensely desire to get what they want and maintain control, they can sometimes get extra possessive and jealous when it comes to work or love. It can take them more time to develop trust and let their guard down with coworkers, friends, and partners. And if anyone’s going to text you 100 times to ask where you are or break up with you for a seemingly insignificant reason, it’s an October Scorpio.
6. November Scorpios Are The Most Intuitive
People often joke that Scorpios can read minds — and they might not be far off. As Wang says, “Third decan Scorpios in particular are typically characterized by their deep intuition and emotional intensity,” says Wang.
Since the third decan is co-ruled by the moon, mid-November babies tend to have a lot of empathy and understanding, allowing them to perceive deeper emotional currents in others. They’re also very observant, which means they’re good at recognizing patterns and predicting things before they happen.
7. October Scorpios Crave Transformation
Scorpios love to explore the far-reaching depths of the human psyche — and this is especially true for October Scorpios. As the only decan of Scorpio that’s solely ruled by the powerful planet Pluto, these scorpions are relentless in their quest for truth and tend. They crave transformation, have an all-or-nothing approach to life, and aren’t afraid to ask big questions.
They’re also OK with the universe taking the wheel. “As the third decan of Scorpio is influenced by the moon, they can be more susceptible to the lunar cycle and the full moon’s energy,” says Wang. Catch them at home casting spells, writing gratitude lists, and seeing what happens.
8. November Scorpios Are Extra Mysterious
All Scorpios have a reputation for being dark and mysterious, but November-born Scorpios arguably value their privacy more than others. That’s because about half of November Scorpios are co-ruled by the illusive planet Neptune, giving them an added veil of enigma, while the other half are co-ruled by the moon, which feels most comfortable hiding in the shadow of the night. These influences emphasize the clandestine nature of November Scorpios, which explains why it always seems like they’re hiding a few secrets.
9. October Scorpios Never Give Up
When a Scorpio is chasing a goal they won’t want to think about anything else, especially October Scorpios. Those guided primarily by Pluto are imbued with an intense determination, says Wang, as well as that strong desire for transformation.
“They often exhibit a more singular focus and drive,” he says. If they want a new job, a new life, or new scenery, they’re going to make it happen. Compare this to November Scorpios, who might enjoy holing up at home and sticking to a routine.
10. November Scorpios Might Play Mind Games
Second decan Scorpios, ruled by enchanting Neptune, are highly skilled at mind games. They’re good at reading a room and can quickly figure out the key to someone’s heart by observing them.
This is true for third decan Scorpios, too, who are co-ruled by the moon and thus very good at knowing what others are thinking. They also have a hint of fiery Sagittarius cusp energy, which means they aren’t afraid to go after what they want.
November Scorpios know what to reveal and what to hold back when it comes to conversations, too. You might think you know them, but chances are they’re hiding about 10 more layers of information beneath their mysterious surface.
