Before you bake up dozens of homemade Christmas cookies to hand out to friends and neighbors, you may want to check the label of your egg carton.
On November 27, Handsome Brook Farms announced a recall of Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs at Costco—sold under the Kirkland Signature brand name—for potential Salmonella contamination. The recall affects 10,800 units of fresh organic eggs, all of which were distributed in the South beginning November 22. The eggs were shipped and distributed to 25 Costco stores in Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Handsome Brook Farms initiated the recall after determining that the eggs sent out to Costco stores were not intended for retail distribution. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Salmonella can be especially dangerous to young children, elderly people, or those with weakened immune systems.
Here’s what to look for in your fridge: The Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs—packaged in plastic egg cartons with the “Kirkland Signature” logo at the top—have a UPC of 9661910680 with a use-by date of January 5, 2025. The affected eggs also contain “P1363” and “327” on the label as depicted in the image below, shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
If you have any of these Kirkland Signature organic eggs in your fridge, the FDA urges you to return the product to your local Costco for a full refund or dispose of any remaining eggs. This recall joins several others we’ve had this fall, including nearly 12 million pounds of meat, soft-ripened cheeses, frozen waffles, salmon, and organic carrots.
At least the bourbon is safe, y’all.
