While you can’t go wrong with a classic red and green color combo during the holidays, sometimes it’s fun to switch things up. If you want to give your decor a modern refresh, we have a perfectly pink—and red—plan to help.
Working with a new color scheme allows you to think outside the (gift) box and determine which decor pieces bring you joy rather than putting them out just because you have them. Whether your style leans traditional or modern, consider adding pink and red to your holiday decorations this year.
The Pink and Red Holiday Trend
According to pros, the use of brighter shades in design isn’t limited to the holidays—people aren’t shy about bringing color to their spaces year-round.
“The emergence of red and pink in holiday decorations reflects a shift towards playful color schemes,” says Eve Jean, interior design expert and founder and CEO of Style My Space Designs. “Designers are moving away from classic hues, and embracing festive settings. Inspired by the Barbie craze that took us down memory lane, red and pink celebrate youthfulness and joy, charming people of all ages.”
Many want their home to reflect their personality, and using unexpected holiday decorations is a fun way to show more of who you are.
How to Decorate with Red and Pink
You may think red and pink clash, so pairing them together in your home can feel a little intimidating. However, there’s a whole spectrum of these colors to choose from—and you can easily add pink to your traditional red decor.
The first step: choosing the right tone. Colors with the same undertones tend to work best together, so stick to a palette of either warm or cool hues for a more intentional scheme. If you want to add pink to the decorations that you already have, take a quick inventory, and choose items to match what you already have.
“You can also opt for rose gold accents instead of traditional gold to introduce subtle pink undertones, and substitute crisp white with warm ivory or pale pink for a cozy and more inviting look,” says Jenny Reimold, HomeGoods featured finder and interior designer. “Lastly, consider using softer sage or frosted greenery—paired with pink—for a modern, elegant palette.”
For a more traditional look, try swapping in softer shades. Reimold recommends replacing classic red tones with shades of blush, coral, or magenta. And to ensure everything feels integrated, bring the red and pink colors into your whole home, not just the tree.
“Introduce pink and red through throw pillows, blankets, or table runners. These additions can refresh your space,” Jean says. And to go all out: “Incorporate pink through wall art or accent walls that complement your current color scheme, adding a touch of flair.”
When it comes to holiday decor, what’s on the outside is just as important as indoors—so don’t forget to include your exterior in your palette update. An entryway is the first area of your home your guests see, so make sure it feels just as bright and welcoming as the rest of your space.
Adding pink and red automatically gives a contemporary look to any style, but that doesn’t mean you have to stray from a vintage aesthetic if that’s your favorite. For a touch of retro glam, mix in gold and silver accents. If you want to keep it light and spirited, Jean encourages adding cutesy details like candy cane designs and whimsical decorations.
“Both of these aesthetics offer a fresh and fashionable twist on classic holiday decor, bringing vibrant energy and style to any celebration,” she says.
