Michelle Obama has a knack for putting an unexpected twist on menswear staples. Her recent appearances have seen her wearing a series of colorful suits and bold jackets. In November, for instance, she wore a slate gray pinstripe power suit during a pre-election event, while in October, she opted for a black and brown animal print suit. This week, however, she paired her blazer with an edgy leather-on-leather outfit while making a rare TV appearance as a guest on The Jennifer Hudson Show.
Obama wore a black leather dress with a fitted waist and a dramatic asymmetric hemline that reached from below her right knee all the way to her left thigh. Even more daring was her choice of footwear—the former First Lady donned a pair of slouchy thigh-high boots, also in black leather, with a towering stiletto heel. (She previously opted for similar over-the-knee boots earlier this year.) She added a business-like twist to the look, throwing on an oversized brown blazer.
She styled her long braids in a half-up top knot to show off a pair of funky colorful statement earrings and accessorized further with a couple of chunky gold rings.
Naturally, Obama’s appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show began with the traditional spirit tunnel—the former First Lady grooved her way to the stage (showing off her leather dress on the way) as the crew cheered her on with the chant, “So honored to have you, Michelle Obama at the happy place.”
She then sat down with Hudson for a chat about her family’s holiday traditions and her new book Overcoming: A Workbook, which serves as a companion The Light We Carry.
During their conversation, Obama gave some updates on her family. Her husband, Barack Obama, she said, is “still working too hard” on the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. She added, “But I think that’s something he will always do.”
She then spoke of their daughters, Malia and Sasha. “They live together,” she said, adding, “I’ve loved every phase of raising my daughters.”
The family plans to spend Christmas together in Hawaii. “We’re going to head to the island for a little sun and to try to unwind,” she said. “That’s why you gotta pick your husband right. He got a lot cuter when I found out he was from Hawaii.”
