The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed its shortlists for the 97th Academy Awards on Tuesday, with From Ground Zero being shortlisted in the International Feature Film category.
This is a significant moment for Palestinian cinema as the anthology, directed by 22 Palestinian filmmakers, reflects on the lives of people in Gaza amid Israel’s intensified aggression since October 7, 2024.
Featuring a blend of documentaries, animation, fiction, and experimental films, the project offers a raw and urgent portrayal of survival, loss, and resilience in the face of tragedy.
Premiering at the 5th Amman International Film Festival in July, From Ground Zero went on to have its North American debut at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival in September.
According to author Narendra Pachkhédé, the film “offers an urgent, intimate glimpse into the human toll of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, far beyond the scope of news bulletins.” Each frame captures the anguish and hope of those affected, weaving together a deeply personal narrative that speaks to the fragility of life under siege.
In the running for Best Documentary Feature Film is The Bibi Files, an American documentary by Alexis Bloom that features leaked footage from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trials.
Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez, a film starring Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana, earned six nominations, including recognition for makeup, sound, original score, international feature, and two original songs: “El Ma” and “Mi Camino.” Additionally, Wicked, the highly anticipated musical starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, received four nominations across makeup, sound, visual effects, and original score.
Why Not Productions
Pakistan’s official submission for the International Feature Film category, The Glassworker—an animated film by Usman Riaz—was not shortlisted for nomination.
The Oscars will be held live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2, 2025, with Emmy-winning comedian Conan O’Brien set to host.
