What causes clots in the brain?
Clots in the brain, also referred to as brain or cerebral thrombosis, are caused by the formation of a blood clot within one of the arteries in the brain that blocks blood supply to a particular area of the brain. The major cause of these clots is the formation of fatty deposits (atherosclerosis) in the arteries, which eventually leads to narrowing or hardening of the blood vessels. This reduces blood flow and increases the chances of clotting.
Some contributing factors to forming clots in the brain are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, and cholesterol buildup because all these, after years of use and existence in the body, may harm the blood vessel wall by making a clot. Other serious risk factors include heart problems, more particularly an atrial fibrillation wherein an irregular beating can produce clot formation in the heart and lead it to reach the brain. Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, and other blood clotting disorders, and even genetic conditions, may increase the likelihood of clots.
In some cases, brain clots result from a rupture or tear in the blood vessel, causing bleeding in the brain, which further increases the chance of clotting. These clots can lead to strokes, which may cause permanent damage to the brain, affecting motor skills, speech, and cognitive function, depending on the area of the brain impacted.
Dr. Aditya Gupta, Director- Neurosurgery & Cyberknife, Artemis Hospital Gurugram explains: Many diseases, conditions, or causes can lead to brain clots. Brain clots are termed as cerebral thrombosis. These happen when there is a clot in blood flowing in the brain, thereby causing serious complications. In most cases, it involves high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes, smoking, or obesity. Long periods of inactivity due to dehydration, injuries, or infections also increase one’s risk of clotting. It may be associated with genetic disorders or an atrial fibrillation complication in the heart.
The risk factor for brain clots would be older adults because the elasticity of vessels decreases with age. High blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and heart conditions are chronic conditions that increase susceptibility. One’s lifestyle, including smoking and excessive alcohol consumption or even a sedentary life, increases the risk. Also, genetic predispositions, such as a family history of blood clots, increase susceptibility. Women on hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy and patients who have undergone surgeries or injuries are also at risk.
