Historians say Mughal Emperor Akbar built this church at the wish of his wife, Maryam. Built in 1599, the Akbari Church has withstood many challenges, including an attack by Ahmed Shah Abdali
The Akbari Church, located in the Wazirpura area of Agra, is considered the first and historical church of North India. It was built in 1599 by Mughal Emperor Akbar. It is said that the tune of ‘Jingle Bells’ was first heard in this church on Christmas. The church is situated near St. Peter’s School in Agra and on Christmas Day, it is specially decorated, and special prayers are organised.
Historian Rajkishore Raje writes in his book Tawarikh-e-Agra that Akbar built this church at the wish of his wife, Maryam. At that time, Akbar was interested in all religions and wanted his queen to learn about other faiths. Jesuit priest Xavier from Lahore requested Akbar to provide a place for the construction of the church, which was granted in Wazirpura at the behest of Maryam.
Special Event On Christmas
Father Rajan of the church states that every year on December 25, special prayers and events are organised. This church is renowned for its historical significance, not only in Agra but throughout North India.
The Akbari Church has faced many challenges throughout history. Due to internal differences among the Portuguese, it was heavily damaged in 1635. The church was also affected during the attack by Ahmed Shah Abdali. In addition, it was set on fire multiple times but was rebuilt each time.
According to reports, Akbar’s son Jahangir gave the church a grander appearance. It is said that this was the first Christian church built during the Mughal period. Despite enduring numerous invasions and conflicts, the church still stands as a testament to its glorious history.
