Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning jumped on the bandwagon as they decided to “hold space” in their latest interview.
The stars of A Complete Unknown sat down with Out Magazine journalist Tracy Gilchrist, who conducted the now-viral interview in November with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, which gave birth to a new meme .
“First off, I just want to let you know that I am holding space for you,” Gilchrist began the conversation with Chalamet and Fanning.
The co-stars responded with glee as they expressed being “speechless” to meet her and quickly reenacted the viral meme moment.
The Wonka star quickly held out his index finger and Fanning readily held it with a pinch.
“It’s an honour talking to you.” Chalamet said. “I feel like sort of star struck. When you walked in, I was like ‘Holy s–t,’ OK this better be good.”
Fanning added, “There’s nothing that we can do that can trump what happened. You know what I mean? We can try.”
In the original interview, Erivo had an emotional reaction to people “holding space” for her song Defying Gravity.
“I didn’t know that was happening,” she said. “That’s really powerful. That’s what I wanted … I didn’t know that was happening.” Grande then reached over to hold Erivo’s index finger, for support.
Clarifying her support to Erivo, Grande later told Variety that in that moment it looked like Erivo might cry. “I just wanted to be there because I knew something big was happening.”
Shedding light on the moment, GLAAD’s Tony Morrison clarified that ‘Holding space’ is to “physically, emotionally and mentally be present with something or someone. So, it’s granting yourself that presence that pause to sit with your emotion.”
A Complete Unknown and Wicked are both running in theatres.
