Ever since Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in 2018, the couple has been making the headlines– and their official exit as senior members of the UK royal family in 2020 only added more fuel to the fire. Amid their recent divorce rumours, considering that Harry and Meghan haven’t been making public appearances together for quite some time, the Sussexes are now embroiled in yet another controversy. As per reports, Prince Harry and Meghan’s latest controversy is based on the claims that the royal couple may have used a surrogate for their children– Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Adding to it, Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, and her half-sister, Samantha Markle, have also spoken up about their concerns.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s surrogacy controversy
It is noted that when Prince Archie was born in 2019, the news was that Meghan was preparing for a home birth at Frogmore Cottage. But later it was reported that Archie was born at Portland Hospital in London. Adding to speculations of a surrogate involved, Prince Harry shared in his memoir ‘Spare’ that they were back to Frogmore Cottage in just two hours after Archie’s birth. “How many women give birth and are home in two hours?… That didn’t make sense unless Meghan didn’t deliver the child herself,” a palace insider has remarked.
Meanwhile, back in 2019, Harry and Meghan were also a bit reluctant to present their newborn boy to the public, which has led to more speculations about the reality of their children’s births. It is noted that while Prince William and Catherine promptly introduced their three children when they were born, Harry and Meghan did so after roughly two days.
Lady Colin Campbell, a royal author who is one of the main critics of the couple due to their lack of transparency about the birth of their children, remarked as per a report by ET, “I think the whole thing stinks to high heaven… Meghan has created a situation that has caused people to believe the children were born by surrogacy. Clear it up once and for all. There should be no mystery as to who is legitimately in the line of succession.”
Adding to this, Meghan’s estranged family, including her father and sister, have also questioned if a surrogate was used in their case. Speaking to journalist Dan Wootton on Thomas Markle’s earlier claims about Archie’s birth, Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Markle, 60, said, “My father said nine months before Archie was allegedly born that Meghan picked up her frozen eggs. I thought: ‘That makes sense there would be a surrogate involved.’ But why the secrecy?… If they used a surrogate, admit it. Instead of lying to the world, just say: ‘We’re using a surrogate.'”
Not just Prince Archie, Harry and Meghan are also being questioned about the birth of their second child, Princess Lilibet, as the royal couple have been a bit reluctant to publicly share details about it.
Why is using a surrogate controversial in this case?
For the unversed, Prince Harry and Meghan’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the sixth and seventh in the line of succession of the British royal family. However, if a surrogate was really used for them, then it would lead to their disqualification from the royal line of succession. The reason: It is said that the heirs to the throne must be born only to a titled royal mother.
While questions about their children’s birth has created yet another controversy, the royal couple Prince Harry and Meghan have refrained from commenting on it and they continue to lead their quiet life in Montecito.
