What Is A Blonde Roast?
Speaking to Indian Express, Deepalakshmi, a registered dietitian at The Cleft and Craniofacial Centre and Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai said, “Blonde roast coffee is a type that is lightly roasted, resulting in a milder flavour profile than medium or dark roasts. They have a higher natural acidity than darker roasts due to their shorter roasting time. This acidity may cause discomfort for sensitive individuals but can be tolerable or even refreshing for others.”
How Is A Blonde Roast Different From Black Coffee?
- 1. Roast Level: Blonde roast is a light roast, meaning the beans are roasted for a shorter period compared to black coffee beans, which are typically medium or dark roasted.
- 2. Flavour Profile: Blonde roasts tend to have a brighter, more acidic flavour, with more pronounced fruity or floral notes, while black coffee (especially darker roasts) tends to have bolder, richer, and more bitter flavors.
- 3. Caffeine Content: Blonde roast generally retains slightly more caffeine than black coffee because it’s roasted for a shorter time, preserving more of the caffeine content compared to darker roasts, where some of it is lost during the longer roasting process.
- 4. Appearance: Blonde roast beans are light brown, with a dry surface. Black coffee beans (from darker roasts) are usually darker brown to almost black, with a shiny surface due to the oils released during the longer roasting.
- 5. Brewing Method: Blonde roasts often taste best when brewed with methods that highlight their bright flavours, like pour-over or light espresso, whereas black coffee is often brewed using a variety of methods like drip coffee, French press, or espresso, which may emphasize richer and deeper tastes.
