Cynthia Erivo has her sights set on a superhero role.
The Wicked star revealed at the National Board of Review Awards Gala in New York City that she’s eager to step into the iconic role of Storm, the weather-controlling mutant from Marvel’s X-Men.
“I really want to play Storm,” Erivo, 38, shared when asked about her dream role. “I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we haven’t uncovered how grand she is and all of that inner turmoil that she has. So I think there’s a world in which we could do something with that.”
Storm, also known as Ororo Munroe, is one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants, with a rich backstory spanning from being worshipped as a goddess in Africa to her claustrophobic struggles after childhood trauma.
The iconic role has been previously played by Halle Berry in the early X-Men films and Alexandra Shipp in later prequels.
Disney’s acquisition of the X-Men franchise has sparked a new era for the characters, with animated series like X-Men ’97 premiering on Disney+ and live-action appearances integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Erivo isn’t the only star eyeing the role; Janelle Monáe has also expressed interest in bringing Storm to life. “One of my dreams has always been to play Storm,” Monáe said in 2020.
Meanwhile, Erivo continues to soar, basking in the success of Wicked and preparing for the release of its second part, Wicked: For Good, in 2025.
