For the second time in as many weeks, there’s a recall impacting Walmart stores around the country. According to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), this latest recall, which follows a broccoli recall from earlier this month, concerns chicken broth. Per a notice from the FDA, this recall was initiated in December 2024, but was only just published on the FDA’s website.
The recall, which is still ongoing, is for 48-ounce containers of Great Value Chicken Broth produced by Canada-based Tree House Foods. Approximately 2,023 cases of chicken broth have been recalled, which translates to more than 12,000 individual cartons of broth. Consumers who are concerned that they might have recalled chicken broth in their kitchen should note that each of the recalled products has a “Best if Used by” date of March 25, 2026. Additionally, the lot code of the recalled broth is 98F09234, the retail unit UPC is 007874206684, and the case UPC is 078742066844.
The recalled chicken broth was distributed from two locations to Walmart stores in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. Approximately 242 Walmart stores in those states have been impacted.
The reason for this recall, as noted by the FDA, is “potential for packaging failures.” Though the FDA didn’t note exactly which part of the packaging is faulty, the agency did declare that these errors “could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage.” Additionally, the FDA has not indicated if any consumers have become ill as a result of this ongoing recall.
While Walmart has yet to publish a formal notice of this recall on its website, the retail giant is currently working with the proper authorities to determine what went wrong. “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted products from the select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
In the meantime, the Walmart spokesperson shared that consumers who purchased the recalled chicken broth should dispose of it immediately and request a full refund.
