Aaron Etherington, a former basketball standout from Hamilton Southeastern High School and a player for the University of Indianapolis and St. Francis University in Fort Wayne, tragically passed away on Tuesday, January 13, at the age of 25.
Etherington’s death, which came unexpectedly, was confirmed by an obituary shared by Hartley Funeral Homes. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born on December 13, 1999, in Noblesville, Indiana, Etherington showed early promise in sports, particularly basketball. He first made a name for himself at Hamilton Southeastern, where his exceptional talent earned him a spot on the 2018 IndyStar Boys Basketball Superteam.
As a senior, Etherington averaged 13 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. Etherington’s standout performance in the sectional championship game against No. 1-ranked Carmel—scoring 18 points and grabbing four rebounds—further solidified his reputation. He was also ranked as the No. 9 recruit in the state by PrepHoops.
Etherington’s college basketball career took him to the University of Toledo before he transferred to the University of Indianapolis and later St. Francis University in Fort Wayne. Throughout his collegiate journey, he was known for his versatility, consistently contributing across the board in scoring, assists, and rebounding.
The basketball community has expressed deep sorrow over his passing. St. Francis University was one of the first to release a tribute, describing Aaron as a “great friend, teammate, and person” who would be missed by many. His passing has left a void among those who knew him.
Aaron came from a basketball family. His brothers, Austin and Alex Etherington, also had notable college careers. Austin played at Indiana University and Butler, while Alex competed at Indiana State and the University of Indianapolis.
Aaron is survived by his parents, Brett and Missy Etherington, and his brothers, as well as extended family. His loved ones, teammates, and friends remember him not only for his basketball prowess but also for his infectious laughter, boundless energy, and passion for life.
Visitation for Aaron will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Arcadia Christian Church. A service to celebrate his life is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, with burial to follow at Cicero Cemetery.
