Just ahead of the holiday season last year, Target made some major changes that sent the message that they were getting tough on crime—well basically that’s what they said. The iconic brand introduced a new (and stricter) return policy in an effort to fight return fraud.
Here is what changed. According to their website, Target says it “reserves the right to refuse returns, refunds, and exchanges, including but not limited to prevent fraud, suspected fraud or abuse.”
Furthermore, while most items can be returned within 90 days, customers will have to take into account the appearance of these items and if they were cared for or not. Unfortunately, this can make or break whether an item can be accepted for a return.
Target writes that, “items that are opened or damaged or do not have a receipt may be denied a refund or exchange.” And if you don’t have a receipt? You’re out of luck.
“In-store returns without an eligible receipt will be denied. Some items, such as electronics, may have a shorter return window. Refer to the individual item description for return policy information.”
In short, if Target suspects something is up with your return, it may just get rejected. It’s important to keep in mind when returning a product that the less damage it has on it, the more likely Target will accept the return. And as always, if you’re ever unsure about their return policy, you can always go on their website to doublecheck on how to handle any specific item.
