The world’s biggest religious gathering, the Maha Kumbh Mela, is currently underway in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Many saints and sages are participating in the event, and several are going viral for various reasons. Among them is 129-year-old Swami Sivananda, who has become the talk of the town.
According to his Aadhaar card, Swami Sivananda was born on August 8, 1896. Having participated in the Kumbh Mela for the past 100 years, he has now revealed the secret to his longevity and fitness. He shared that practising yoga for several hours daily is what keeps him fit. His life has been devoted to sadhana and yoga.
According to an Economic Times report, Swami Sivananda was born in Varanasi. Tragically, he lost his parents at the age of six and was raised by relatives. From a young age, he resolved to lead the life of a sadhu. After leaving Varanasi, he embarked on a spiritual journey to understand his purpose in life. By prioritising sadhana and meditation, he gradually realised the importance of yoga and made it an integral part of his daily routine. For a century, Swami Sivananda has attended Kumbh Melas held in Prayagraj, Nashik, Ujjain, and Haridwar.
In 2022, Swami Sivananda was honoured with the Padma Shri award by then-President Ram Nath Kovind at the age of 125. He credits his longevity and fitness to a simple lifestyle centred around yoga and meditation. His diet is minimal and consists of boiled vegetables, spices, and rice without fat.
Key Factors Of A Healthy Life
He believes that a simple diet, waking up early, and self-discipline are the three key factors for a long and healthy life. Additionally, he emphasises that meditation and yoga play crucial roles in maintaining physical and mental well-being.
Swami Sivananda has chosen to live a life devoid of modern technology. He avoids electricity, cars, and phones, preferring simplicity and independence.
He travels only by train and resides in Kabir Nagar, Varanasi. His life revolves around peace and meditation, and even today, he continues to follow the disciplined lifestyle that has sustained him for decades.
