It is believed that on Mauni Amavasya, ancestors visit their descendants. Those facing difficulties in life or seeking relief from ‘Pitra Dosh’ can follow certain remedies on this auspicious day
According to Hindu religious beliefs, the Amavasya (New Moon) day is dedicated to honouring ancestors. On this day, rituals such as bathing in holy rivers, making donations, and offering tarpan are performed to help ancestors attain salvation.
The month of Magh holds special religious significance, making the Mauni Amavasya in this month particularly important. This time Mauni Amavasya will held on January 29. It is believed that on Mauni Amavasya, ancestors visit to meet their descendants. Those facing difficulties in life or seeking relief from Pitra Dosh can follow certain remedies on this auspicious day.
Pandit Shubham Tiwari from the Shri Sachcha Akhileshwar Mahadev Temple, Rishikesh, told Local18 that while every Amavasya holds significance in Hinduism, the Amavasya of Magh is considered especially auspicious. Bathing in holy rivers on this day is said to cleanse sins and bestow virtue. It is also the most opportune time to appease ancestors and eliminate Pitra Dosh.
Pandit Tiwari said that the word ‘Mauni’ means ‘silence’. Observing silence and meditating on this day is believed to provide spiritual peace and energy. Bathing in sacred rivers such as the Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, and others holds immense importance.
Here are some remedies to perform on Mauni Amavasya to get rid of Pitra Dosh:
- Holy Bathing: Bathe in holy rivers before sunrise, as it holds special significance. If visiting a river is not possible, mix Gangajal in your bathing water at home. This practice helps remove negativity from life and alleviates Pitra Dosh.
- Performing Tarpan and Pinddaan: For the peace of ancestral souls, perform tarpan and pinddaan on this day. Offer water mixed with black sesame seeds in a holy river. This act ensures the blessings of ancestors, bringing peace and happiness to the family.
- Charity: Charity is a key ritual on Mauni Amavasya. Feeding Brahmins, the poor, or the needy and donating items such as clothes, flour, jaggery, fruits, and blankets are considered auspicious. These acts alleviate life’s troubles and invite ancestral blessings.
- Worship The Peepal Tree: It is believed that ancestors reside in the Peepal tree on Amavasya. Offer water to the tree and light a lamp of pure cow ghee under it. This brings peace to ancestors and ensures prosperity and happiness in the home.
- Offering in Rivers: Mix barley, sesame seeds, and rice in raw milk and release it into a river. This remedy is highly effective in calming Pitra Dosh and removing obstacles in life.
- Performing Havan: Performing a havan at home on this day is considered auspicious. If this is not feasible, burn cow dung cakes and offer ghee and jaggery incense to the fire while chanting the mantra, “Pitri Devtabhyo Arpanamastu”.
- Feeding Cows: In Hinduism, feeding cows is one of the most virtuous acts. On Mauni Amavasya, feeding green fodder, jaggery, and chapati to cows brings ancestral blessings and ensures abundance in wealth and food in the household.
