Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell on loan for the rest of the season.
The 28-year-old underwent a medical on Monday ahead of a switch to Selhurst Park.
“I’m very excited to be here. Crystal Palace is a club that’s going in a great direction,” Chilwell said. “You look at the last few months, with the results and how the team’s playing, and it was a no-brainer to make the decision to come here.”
Chilwell is attempting to revive his career after being part of the Chelsea’s so-called “bomb squad,” a group of players deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Enzo Maresca last summer.
However, he was unable to secure a move and has spent the first part of the campaign in the wilderness, making just one appearance as a substitute in September’s Carabao Cup win over League Two side Barrow.
Chilwell won the Champions League in his first season at Stamford Bridge after arriving in a £50 million ($62m) deal from Leicester City in August 2020.
“Ben has experience at the highest level of European and international football,” Palace chairman Steve Parish said of the deal. “I’m delighted that he has joined us on loan, and we believe he will prove to be a great addition to the squad.”
