How many times have you complained that someone you know eats much bigger portions or much greasier meals than you but doesn’t seem to gain weight while you put on weight despite portion and temptation control? Well, it’s all about who has the better metabolism.
Metabolism is the process by which the body converts food into energy. If metabolism is not operating properly, it can have a significant effect on the body. Researchers at Harvard University have now identified certain methods to enhance metabolism.
When you consume food or beverages, they travel to the stomach and undergo digestion. Throughout this process, the body extracts nutrients from what you’ve eaten. These nutrients are then converted into energy by the body, which powers all your activities. Even when you’re sleeping or at rest, the body remains active by utilising this energy. Even the act of breathing requires energy.
Tips To Increase Metabolism
- According to Harvard University, many people today are focused on eating less or adopting practices like intermittent fasting. They believe that consuming fewer calories will lead to weight loss. However, Harvard University experts advise against this approach.
- Eating less can slow down metabolism, which the body gradually begins to feel. This reduction in metabolic rate leads to fewer calories being burned. Consequently, weight loss becomes more challenging. Therefore, it is crucial not to make this mistake. Consuming fewer calories results in reduced energy availability. This, in turn, decreases the basal metabolic rate (BMR), which refers to the energy the body requires for essential functions during rest or sleep. When calorie intake is insufficient, the body cannot burn enough calories to facilitate weight loss.
- The most effective way to increase metabolism is through physical activity. The more you exert your body, the greater the benefits. Engage in activities such as brisk walking, rope jumping, weightlifting, strength training, swimming, and cycling. These activities boost metabolism and provide the body with ample energy. Moreover, increased exercise leads to a higher calorie expenditure.
- To further enhance metabolism, it is essential to consume a high-protein diet. Include foods like chicken, fish, beans, Greek yoghurt, nuts, chia seeds, soya, cheese, lentils, and beans in your diet.
- Caffeine and green tea can also boost metabolism. Aim to drink around three cups of green tea per day. Additionally, you can consume up to 100 grams of caffeine daily. However, it is advisable to limit coffee consumption to one or two cups per day.
