My ideal beauty routine would consist of two things: effectiveness and ease. As much as I’d love to dedicate an hour every morning to grooming, primping, and prepping, I just don’t have the time. As a beauty editor, however, my skin and hair health are always at the top of my self-care list—so I found a solution: home goods that double as beauty products.
You may be aware of their overall health benefits, but they happen to improve my beauty routine, too. Whether its reducing wrinkles just by sleeping on a satin pillowcase or improving dandruff, dry hair, and hair growth with simply swapping in a new showerhead, here are the home products that have cut the time I spend on my beauty routine in half (and made my life so much comfier).
5 Home Products for Hair and Skin Care
Jolie Skin the Jolie Filtered Showerhead
Amazon
My soon-to-be sister-in-law introduced me to the Jolie Filtered Showerhead a few years ago, and it’s easily one of my favorite no-effort additions to my beauty routine. The filter (which is super easy to install, BTW) removes chlorine and metals from typical tap water, so it’s gentle on both your hair and skin. I dealt with dry hair and dandruff for years, and every time I use this showerhead, I step out with a noticeable difference in my scalp. While it’s not a fix-all—I still use clarifying shampoos and hydrating leave-in treatments—I can honestly say that I see less flakes, have less itchiness and irritation, and as a result, I’ve seen visible hair growth; it looks and feels thicker. Oh, and the water pressure is divine.
Hey Dewy Compact Cool Mist Humidifier
Amazon
Humidifiers and other wellness tech products have always been low on my household goods shopping list (especially now, when I have to save my hard-earned money for eggs!). So when the uncomfortably dry winter weather set in last month, I finally caved and set up the Hey Dewy Compact Cool Mist Humidifier—and it exceeded my expectations in so many ways. In addition to the expected benefits of breathing better and alleviating congestion, I was not expecting the impact this little gadget would have on my skin. This one little change has completely eliminated the seemingly perpetually dry, flaky skin on my nostrils and around my mouth—and was the only change I made to my routine recently that could have had an impact on my skin and hair’s softness. I turn it on anytime I’m spending extended amounts of time at home, and despite its compact size, I only refill it once a day.
Kitsch Satin Pillowcase
Amazon
I’ve slept on my stomach for as long as I can remember. If I’m not in a full murder-scene-chalk-outline pose, I’m not getting a good night’s sleep—which is unfortunate not only for my posture and general neck pain, but apparently also for wrinkle-development on my skin?! Ce n’est pas juste! Upon learning this, I went on a googling frenzy to find a solution. The unanimous answer (after fixing my sleep posture, which ain’t gonna happen)? A silk or satin pillowcase. I’ve tried half a dozen brands, and Kitsch’s Satin pillowcase is second to none. I noticed within days of using mine that I wasn’t waking up with facial creases (which in the long run, contribute to wrinkle formation) and my hair was smoother and less frizzy upon awakening than I’ve ever seen it. There’ve even been days when I’ve gone straight to the office without brushing it—the satin fabric keeps it that well-tamed.
Badesofa Luxury Terry Towel Set
Badesofa
A side effect of having chronically dry skin is heightened sensitivity, so I avoid wiry, itchy fabrics at all costs—which is easier said than done, especially when it comes to towels. Badesofa’s Luxury Terry Towel Set is my recommendation to anyone in the same situation. The fabric is so gentle and soft on my skin and is equally non-damaging on my hair. For years, I would wrap my hair up in other towels after showering and notice its contribution to breakage; based on my hair’s soft texture after using Badesofa’s, it’s clear that these towels are having an impact on my overall hair health.
Hospitology Products Hypoallergenic Mattress Cover
Amazon
Speaking of sensitive skin, I can’t speak highly enough about this hypoallergenic mattress cover. I tend to run hot at night, so I’ve had countless mornings when I’ve woken up drenched in sweat with skin left covered in rashes. Regularly cleaning my sheets is one way to tackle the irritation, but an even bigger game-changer? Adding a hypoallergenic mattress cover. It prevents mold and mildew growth that form from excess moisture (ew, sorry!), which was clearly contributing to my redness and rashes. Adding this to my home has been one of the easiest body care game-changers. Did I mention it’s machine washable, too?
