In China, the trend of hiring girlfriends for social appearances has been popular since 2018. At that time, a 20-minute service was available for just 10 yuan at shopping malls.
According to a report by The Sun, around 10-15 models were available at designated stands, and customers could hire one for 20 minutes. However, physical contact or outings were not allowed.
With the rise of online services, these rentals have moved to apps and social media platforms like Instagram. In China and Japan, one can easily rent a girlfriend through an app, choosing a package, and paying to spend time together.

Similar Platform In India
Interestingly, India also saw a similar app emerge in 2024, offering boyfriends for rent. The platform went so far as to advertise job openings, inviting applications from men and stipulating certain beauty standards.
Although the concept of renting a girlfriend never gained traction in India, the service of booking a boyfriend first started in 2018 in Mumbai through an app called ‘Rent A Boyfriend’.
By 2022, similar services had started in Bengaluru and subsequently expanded to other major cities. However, with the rise of dating apps, the demand for rental partners, once priced between Rs 600 and Rs 6,000, gradually declined as people shifted towards more conventional dating platforms.
