Despite their absence from this year’s Invictus Games in Vancouver, B.C., Archie and Lilibet are getting curious about the competition that their father, Prince Harry, founded back in 2014. Speaking in a new interview with People, the Duke of Sussex explained that they are both “fascinated” by the competitors, all of whom identify as wounded, injured, and/or sick veterans.
“It’s a very interesting conversation to have with your kids—to explain why that person is missing a leg, why that person is missing an arm, why do they look the way they do,” he told the outlet. “It’s challenging but important.”

“Our kids are still so young, but Archie especially is asking those questions,” he continued. “I’m constantly trying to make sure that I get it right in explaining what’s happened to [the competitors] and what we do at Invictus to try to make their lives better and give them a chance to redefine themselves.”
As for his own family’s athleticism? Prince Harry hopes that both Archie and Lilibet “will take on every sport they want as well, because I think it’s really important for all of us.”

This year’s events in Vancouver marked the first winter edition of the Invictus Games. After an opening ceremony that included performances by the likes of Chris Martin and some very cute PDA from Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, the competition was officially underway. Markle then left the games five days early to reunite with the kids in California.
“To have my wife here supporting me is amazing,” Harry told People. “I love that she’s by my side. It’s such an important piece to this whole adventure.”

Following this year’s competition, the Invictus Games will return to the U.K. in 2027. Whether or not Harry is planning on more winter editions, however, remains to be seen. “I’ve already had lots of people come up to me and ask whether there’s going to be a continuous cycle of Winter Games, and the answer to that is, we’ll have to wait and see!” he teased. “But everyone is very happy to be here.”
