When it comes to organization and storage, there are so many options for containers–and plenty of opinions on what goes where and how things should be stored. Whether you have extra glass or plastic containers, it’s good to know the proper uses for both.
When it comes to plastic, there are certain items that should never be kept inside, like raw meat, candles, and photographs–but for other items, plastic is the perfect fit.
Professional organizer Jamie Hord tells Southern Living that plastic containers are the perfect storage tool for dry goods or anything that has many parts and “needs corralled.
Plastic storage containers are a great tool for organizing basements, attics, and even garage spaces, because they can stack and store with ease.
“Anything stored in the garage, basement, (or) attic is best in plastic bins, because anything else can absorb moisture and create mold,” Hord explains.
Sheets, Towels, And Blankets
No linen closet? No problem. Storing extra sheets, towels, and blankets in plastic containers is a great way to keep them organized without losing your mind about where to store them.
This is true for all dry goods, including clothes, according to Hord, who says this way you can easily clean them–and keep them clean.
Items That Can Spill
Hord says that items prone to spilling–whether that’s art supplies or sugar and pasta–are great for being stored in plastic containers; however, there is one exception.
Those storing chemicals, including some cleaning supplies, in plastic containers should be wary of temperature increases–especially in the South where the thermostat can creep pretty high–which can cause reactions.
Books
Yes it’s true that sometimes storing books in plastic containers can lead to mildewed pages, but if the plastic containers are in a temperature-controlled room–go for it.
“Books are best in airtight containers to keep them free from moisture,” Hord says.
Tools
Even the most organized homeowners might admit their garage or shed could use a little sprucing–especially when it comes to a workbench.
“Tools are great in strong plastic bins to hold their weight,” Hord says.
Kid Toys
Constantly stepping on Lego sets? Need to make sure every Barbie has their accessories? Plastic containers to the rescue. Hord emphasizes that plastic containers for children’s toys that have many parts are a smart choice.
