Sure, it just snowed, and the weather outside is still occasionally frightful, but it’s important to remember that spring isn’t too far away. So, while you’re pining for the sun but still spending a lot of time indoors, it’s a good idea to prep for the upcoming season a bit early. Here’s how to get your house ready for spring starting now.
Declutter Every Room
If you’re planning on giving your home a good cleaning in the spring, it’s important to declutter first. Elena Ledoux of Superb Maids DC tells me to start by focusing on one room at a time. “Get rid of things you don’t use or need,” she says. “This not only makes cleaning easier but also leaves your space feeling more peaceful. Plus, it’s a great chance to donate items that could benefit others.”
Evaluate Your Closet
While you’re decluttering in the bedroom, give a little extra attention to your closet. The idea here isn’t just to get a head start on spring cleaning but perhaps also on spring shopping. Get rid of anything that no longer looks good, fits, or just isn’t your style. If something is torn, ripped, or simply can’t be repaired, throw it out. Then, assess what needs to be taken to the dry cleaner. This way, you’ll already have fresh and clean outfits ready when the first warm day arrives.
Check Your Air Conditioner
Sure you may currently be blasting the heat, but keep in mind you aren’t too far away from wanting things a little cooler. “Run your AC just to make sure it’s working properly,” says Kat Christine, licensed contractor and DIY Expert, founder of She Fixed That LLC. “[This way], you’re ahead of the game when summer comes.”
If you find that something is malfunctioning, you can start working on a fix now—and you won’t be sweating buckets while you wait for an appointment or a part.
If you have an HVAC filter, Christine advises changing the filter and spritzing a little fabric refresher on it to make your house smell fresh and clean when you run the heating or cooling.
Check Your Gutters
You might not be thinking about your gutters right now, but you should be. Christine says it’s a good time to check them and clean them, ahead of any potential problems. “April showers bring May flowers,” she says. “Make sure all gutters are clear and that your downspouts are draining away from your foundation.”
Clean The Refrigerator Coils
Spending lots of time in the house? Christine tells me that’s a fantastic reason to finally clean your refrigerator coils. “Pull out the fridge and vacuum [the coils],” she says. And be sure to bookmark this full guide to refrigerator maintenance for all the steps you need to know to keep your fridge in good working condition.
Clean The Inside Of Your Fridge
While you’re at it—don’t forget to clean the inside of your fridge, too. Erin Zanelli, co-founder of Tranquil Home, recommends giving the space a spring makeover a little early, especially after the holidays. “Arrange items in clear containers and label shelves,” she says. “Create designated areas for fruits, vegetables, drinks, and snacks. It’s not only pleasing to the eye, but also makes meal prep more efficient.”
Clean Your Yard And Prevent Unwelcome Guests
Once the snow melts, Christine suggests doing a thorough yard cleaning. “Get rid of piles that might make tempting homes for the critters that will be stirring,” she says.
