Nowadays, we constantly hear about the various new types of hacking scams that take place on WhatsApp and the number of hackers targeting WhatsApp users has seen increasing. According to Keepnet, with over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp has become a prime target for cybercriminals. Hackers use various deceiving tricks and tactics, such as phishing scams, social engineering attacks, and media-savvy spyware, to gain illegal access to users’ accounts and steal sensitive information or form a chain of account hacks. The recent rise in hacking incidents has increased concerns about the security of personal data and the need for users to take stringent measures to protect themselves.

Recently, Cecille Lee Rodrigues, Ex-AAP Candidate of Taleigao Constituency 2017, shared a video on her Instagram handle where she talked about the alarming rise in WhatsApp hacking incidents in Goa and across the country. She explained how hackers send a verification code to your WhatsApp mobile number through a friend’s hacked WhatsApp account, and ask you to share the two-step verification code.
Once you share the code, your phone also gets hacked, and the chain continues as you become the next person to send a verification code to someone else. Rodrigues stressed upon the importance of being aware of this scam and urged people not to share the verification code to prevent falling prey to hackers.
Here are 5 ways by which you can prevent your WhatsApp from being hacked
Set up the 2-step verification:
Turning on two-step verification is a great method to add an extra layer of security to your WhatsApp account. This way, even if someone gets your phone number, they won’t be able to log in to your account without the verification code that is sent to your email. It is very important never to share your registration code or two-step verification PIN with anyone. By keeping this information confidential, you can effectively protect your account from unauthorized use and possible hacking attempts. Always remain alert and prioritize your online security.
Update your WhatsApp regularly:

Updating your WhatsApp app regularly is important to ensure security. Every update comes with the newest security patches and features that are supposed to fight new hacking methods. Keeping the app updated makes sure that you get the maximum protection for your account from possible threats and unauthorized access.
Stay aware of unknown links and messages:
Avoid clicking on links or messages sent by unknown contacts. They may be fraud activities that attempt to steal your personal details or install malware on your device. Being cautious in such a situation with suspecting activity helps safeguard your digital security and avoid future unauthorised use of your personal information.
Keep a regular check on your linked devices
Check your linked devices regularly to make sure that your account is secure. Select WhatsApp Settings > Linked Devices to see all devices linked to your account. To remove a linked device, tap on the device and select “Log Out.” Regular monitoring helps prevent unauthorized access.

Secure your device access:
Set a device code to secure your phone and pay attention to who has physical access to it. Anyone with physical access to your phone may be able to use your WhatsApp account without your consent. Locking your device prevents unauthorised use and keeps your privacy secure.
