Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti Wishes 2025: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary, widely celebrated as Shiv Jayanti, is more than just a holiday in Maharashtra—it’s a grand tribute to one of India’s most legendary warriors. His legacy of bravery, justice and self-rule continues to inspire generations.
While the official date is observed on February 19, an interesting debate surrounds his actual birth date. As we commemorate the 395th birth anniversary of this iconic leader, let’s explore the history, significance, and various ways to celebrate Shivaji Jayanti.
Why Are There Two Different Dates For Shiv Jayanti?
According to Drik Panchang, Shivaji Bhosale (1630-1680 C.E.), the formidable Maratha ruler, was born near Junnar in the Pune district to Shahaji Bhosale and Jijabai. While he is popularly known as Chhatrapati Shivaji, the exact date of his birth remains a topic of scholarly discussion.
Two distinct dates have been proposed. Some historians argue that he was born on February 19, 1630, while others suggest April 6, 1627, as his actual birth date.
The Maharashtra government officially recognises February 19, as Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary. However, what many don’t realise is that this date is based on the Julian calendar rather than the widely used Gregorian calendar.
Understanding The Dates
The alternative date, April 6, 1627, corresponds to April 16, 1627, in the Gregorian calendar. When converted to the Hindu lunar calendar, it aligns closely with the proposed Hindu Tithi—Dwitiya, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha, Vikram Samvat 1684, as per Drik Panchang.
The first date (February 19, 1630) has been widely accepted based on recommendations by a committee of eminent scholars. According to Drik Panchang, when converted into the Hindu lunar calendar followed in Maharashtra (Amanta calendar), this date corresponds to Krishna Paksha Tritiya in the Phalguna month. It is this alignment that has led to the official recognition of February 19 as the day to celebrate Shivaji Jayanti.
