After a torrid six-game winning streak, the Kansas State Wildcats men’s basketball team’s midseason momentum recently grounded to a halt. The team dropped their past two games to the BYU Cougars and Utah Utes while on a road swing in Utah.
Delighting in trolling Wildcat fans online after the skid was none other than the Lawrence, Kansas — home of rival Kansas Jayhawks — police department.
The barrage of posting started early the morning after Kansas State’s loss to Utah on Monday. With temperatures for Tuesday in Lawrence hovering around 3 degrees Fahrenheit, the Lawrence PD advised residents on potentially staying in their houses — by comparing the conditions to Kansas State’s record in national championship games. The Wildcats are one of just a few Power 4 conference schools to have never won a team national title in an NCAA sanctioned sport.
The roads around Lawrence aren’t great, but they also aren’t terrible. We aren’t currently working any crashes or slide-offs. However, it’s colder than KState’s national championship record out there, so maybe stay home anyway.

When the post unsurprisingly received rapid replies from scorned Kansas State fans referencing the Jayhawks’ own season downturn, the account’s administrator didn’t back down, doubling down on the jabs at the Wildcats’ national championship quests.
The police department also fired back to a reply with a joke about the tears of Kansas State fans creating ice hazards on the roads.
We’ve worked 0 weather related crashes since midnight, so that’s great. But if we get too many Wildcat tears on the road they’ll freeze and break our crash-free streak. https://t.co/9Wlo8ca5Cd

After a short break, the account went back at the Wildcats later in the day with another weather update-turned-troll — this time taking a shot at the unique appearance of the school’s Willie the Wildcat mascot.
It’s not the first time the Lawrence PD has used its account to crack sports-related jokes. Last month, it claimed to have rejected a request for its chief of police to interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching position.
The Jayhawks will hope Lawrence PD’s jokes will not come with karmic retribution — Kansas has a road game of its own Tuesday night in Utah, heading to Provo to take on BYU.
