When Not to Use Steam Cleaners on Hardwood Floors
According to most experts, the answer to when you should use a steam cleaner on hardwood floors is simple: never.
“I strongly advise against using steam cleaners on hardwood floors,” says Francisco Romero, owner of Romero Hardwood Floors Inc.
Romero isn’t alone. In fact, the National Wood Floor Association (NWFA) also advises against the use of steam cleaners on hardwood flooring, as they “will damage the finish and the wood over long periods of time.”
Steam cleaners are effective tools for multiple flooring types, and many other areas of the home, as the heat will clear dirt and grime as well as disinfect the flooring. The problem with using steam cleaners on hardwood or other wood flooring types is that moisture can seep between the floorboards as well as cracks and crevices in the wood.
This exposure can impact the shape of the wood, causing it to warp and twist over time. It can also cause discoloration in the hardwood and may make the material more vulnerable to serious issues like mold and mildew growth.

First of all, there are some more modern steam cleaners that are designed for use on hardwood floors, or so their manufacturers say. Companies that offer these products are quick to clarify that the hardwood flooring must be sealed properly, but experts like Romero still wouldn’t recommend it.
“In my experience, moisture is the enemy of wood floors, and steam cleaners introduce unnecessary risks,” Romero says. “I always recommend avoiding any steam cleaning, even on sealed floors, due to potential gaps in protection and unforeseen damages.”
In fact, experts like Romero suggest you steer clear of steam cleaners on multiple other flooring types as well, such as engineered hardwood flooring, laminate, and even linoleum. Since these products contain wood particles, Romero says they too are susceptible to damage from a steam cleaner.
