Tannaz Irani revealed that she was diagnosed with avascular necrosis in 2021. Here’s all that you need to know about this condition which leads to the death of a bone tissue.
Best known for her role in multiple television serials, actor Tannaz Irani recently revealed how a serious condition left her in a wheelchair. The actor talked about how she was struggling to walk in 2021 and how she thought that it was because of her weight gain or a minor issue. But the truth was much deeper than that as it was later revealed that she was diagnosed with avascular necrosis (AVN).
Appearing on the Inner Habit podcast, Tannaz Irani recalled the challenging period of her life. She mentioned how she had also joined MMA to address the weight but that only made her condition worse. She said, “I went and got my back checked, thinking something was wrong with my spine, and did that treatment for almost three months. My back became ok, but I still couldn’t put weight on my leg. Then I started limping and that too in a very odd manner: I would take my leg and stick it out and put it back in (while walking). That became a motion I mastered so fast and one could sense that there was something amiss. That worsened it. However, being an actress, I didn’t want to give in.”
She continued, “I took MRIs, CT scans and everything. But they just said, maybe I have AVN. Basically, people who are alcoholics or take a lot of steroids get it. Neither am I an alcoholic, nor have I taken steroids. So, they were also puzzled. Thus, I became very depressed.”
What Is Avascular Necrosis (AVN)?
Avascular Necrosis (AVN) is a condition that occurs when there is a loss of blood supply to a bone, leading to the death of bone tissue. This lack of blood flow causes the bone to weaken and may result in bone collapse or joint dysfunction.
What Causes AVN?
- Trauma or injury
- Medical conditions
- Medications such as long-term use of corticosteroids
- Other factors such as heavy alcohol consumption, high cholesterol, and smoking
What Are The Symptoms Of AVN?
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Joint collapse
How Is It Diagnosed And Treated?
X-rays and MRI scans are commonly used to diagnose AVN. It is treated with pain management where the weight on the affected joint is reduced. Apart from this, some cases might also require surgery. In Irani’s case, she underwent hip replacement surgery and was put in a wheelchair.
