When scrolling through your social feeds, you’re bound to come across a few retro pastel fridges— especially in dopamine decor-inspired spaces. There’s no denying these adorable appliances are a lot of fun, but upgrading to a brand-new colorful refrigerator tends to come with a hefty price tag.
If a big investment isn’t on the cards right now—or if you want a completely custom color, pattern, or finish—there’s a controversial DIY solution that just might be worth trying: painting your fridge.
So, should you paint your fridge? The short answer is maybe—but our design experts say to proceed carefully. These are the pros, cons, and considerations to keep in mind before you pick up that paintbrush.

Colorful Fridges Are On-Trend
Charming and colorful kitchens are set to be amongst 2025’s biggest kitchen design trends, so whether you opt to buy a new fridge or paint your current appliance, your space is sure to be in line with what’s currently “in.”
“Colorful appliances have been trending for the last several years and I do like them, but it’s important to make sure they are the right long-term choice for you,” says interior designer Peter Spalding.
Just like in the rest of your home, kitchen design and decor styles are very personal choices. So, painting your fridge is worth going for if you’ve loved the eye-catching and cheerful look for a while, and know you’ll continue to adore it—even if trends change.

DIY on a Budget
As one of the largest appliances in the kitchen, your fridge acts as a focal point in the space, and painting it can be just as impactful as adding an accent wall, but for a fraction of the price, and in a much shorter timeframe.
Although neither of our designers have taken on this DIY themselves, both agree it could be a great choice for those wanting the nostalgic look for less, and for DIYers who are ready to make a punchy change to the heart of their home.
“While I haven’t painted a client’s fridge yet, it’s a fantastic DIY option for homeowners looking to refresh their space,” says home designer Nina Lichtenstein. “Painting a fridge can definitely be a bold and budget-friendly way to bring character to a kitchen.”
“I think this choice depends on age and budget. It’s not something I have ever done for a client, but for someone young and bootstrapping, it could be fun,” Spalding says.
Consider Longevity
From style factor to cost, it’s clear there are certainly some pros when it comes to painting a fridge. But Spalding and Lichtenstein say there are a few drawbacks of this DIY, too, and most of its cons come with the test of time—in terms of both style and practicality.
“You do eventually approach an age where this kind of fun look can suggest a tendency towards kitsch, which is something clients might seek a designer to help them avoid,” Spalding says.
“It’s not the most durable option for heavily used kitchens or rentals,” Lichtenstein adds.
Choose Your Paint Wisely
One of the best ways to ensure your newly painted appliance will actually last through the years is to select the right materials for the project. And according to Lichtenstein, the perfect paint to use for your fridge is about more than just color. Finding the right finish is key.
“Chalk paint or appliance epoxy are two great materials that can completely transform an outdated fridge,” Lichtenstein says. “I can imagine a retro mint green or sophisticated matte black finish working wonderfully.”
While you’re shopping for the perfect shade, it’s important to keep an eye out for paints that can be used on metal, and to also pick up some sandpaper, primer, and sealant if you’re not using an appliance epoxy.
Colorful Alternatives
If you’re working with a rental kitchen, Lichtenstein says not to fret. There are plenty of ways to bring a pop of color and achieve a similar look to a painted fridge while ensuring your security deposit stays protected.
“Alternatives like magnetic panels can mimic the look and feel of a painted or customized fridge without the permanence,” she says.
As a renter, you may also want to consider peel-and-stick wallpaper, vinyl, or contact paper as more durable and less permanent options—especially if you’re a maximalist or lover of patterns and murals.
