Undaunted by the open-plan layout and bland interior of this stripped-bare Regency house in the West Country, the new owner employed a dream team of decorator Edward Hurst and architect Joshua Berry to bring it to life with bold colour, rich pattern and fine antiques for a distinctive take on English country-house style. It was the dream brief, the dream client and – with Pip Morrison also working on the garden and the landscape – the dream team, who were all onboard from the start, giving the project a clear direction.
A magical, theatrical London house by Rachel Chudley
Interior designer Rachel Chudley and writer and performance artist Rachel Snider, the owner of this London house, share more than a name. Their love of fashion, art and the avant-garde is reflected in its surrealist-inspired interiors, which nonetheless work for family life. Rachel Snider says of Chudley’s work, ‘she has a multidisciplinary approach and a playfulness that I love. There is always something surprising in her work, but she’s very sensitive and collaborative, so you never feel like you’re being oppressed by her way of doing things.’
Julian Broad’s ancient longhouse in the Welsh hills
With a vision of a bohemian lifestyle in the Welsh hills, Julian Broad left London for this ancient longhouse, where he has stripped away modern additions to create more authentic interiors filled with eclectic objects and curios, many of which tell the story of his career as a portrait photographer. ‘I was thrilled by the awkwardness of this place,’ he explains, referring to the fact that it is miles from a main road and 10 minutes along a bumpy track to even a minor one. ‘All the decisions I’ve made throughout my life have come from the heart rather than anything practical.’
