Lighting may seem like a small detail, but it can have a big impact on your home. Luckily, updating these fixtures doesn’t have to be arduous and costly. There are many ways to incorporate affordable lighting in your home, from switching out a lampshade to inexpensive cordless options—and making the transformation happen is much easier than you’d think. We spoke to lighting experts and interior designers about how to put these foolproof solutions into action and illuminate your space like never before—without breaking the bank.
Floor It
A sturdy floor lamp will beautifully illuminate your space, and there are plenty of affordable options in the category. “If you’re looking for that extra layer of warmth, bring in a floor lamp to the space, or a few candles,” says Tom Magill, senior home stylist at Anthropologie. “It’s the kind of easy update that can completely transform a space with minimal effort.”
Make It Custom
For a thrifty, custom look, try adding a one-of-a-kind accent to your illumination. “Upgrading your space through lighting can be as simple as swapping out the finial on your lamps,” says interior designer Palmer Weiss. “For under $20, you can find beautiful options that add an elegant touch; a quick search on eBay will yield affordable and unique choices. I tend to stay away from metal finials, as their finishes can sometimes be dicey and read cheaply. Instead, I love the look of stone—they come in beautiful colors and organic shapes that feel like jewelry for your lamps.”
Cover It Up
Has dated overhead lighting ruined the ambience of your home? Tulip’s light covers are the perfect solution, with some options priced at just $139. “It effortlessly fits over harsh, ceiling-mounted light fixtures, completely transforming the look and feel of your room,” says brand founder Lori Smyth. “Another great option is to add small table lamps to your bookshelves—or even a kitchen counter—which brings the light down to eye level, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere.”
Mix Materials
The key to eye-catching lighting is unexpected materials. “Whatever your interiors aesthetic is, lighting is key to setting the mood and the atmosphere,” says Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg, head of design and creative at H&M HOME. “Table lamps are incredibly versatile—use a ceramic base and change the lampshade to allow for variety in color, patterns, and material texture.” This approach can be an affordable way to mix and match your lighting scheme.
Level Up Your Look
To prevent your lighting from falling flat, place it at different levels. “The lighting you use is so important for your space that I have a whole chapter on it in my book,” says interior designer Emma Beryl. “When you use a combination of light sources, you gain greater control over the way a space feels and functions.”
These different lamps and pendants can be easy to find, install, and buy, too. “There are so many styles of plug-in sconces nowadays,” she adds. “You don’t even need to hire a pricey electrician.”
Lean on the Lampshades
You don’t have to spend money on new lamps. Instead, save what you have and just change the shades. “Switching out your lampshades is a simple and low-cost way to refresh your home,” says Jo Plant, creative director of Pooky Lighting. “Opt for bold colors and patterns to add a touch of personality, or choose neutral tones for a more subtle update. Lampshades come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, like linen, rattan, or metal, so there’s something for every aesthetic.”
Opt for Organic
When it comes to lighting, it pays to think outside the box. “Unique lighting can transform the overall look of a room,” says interior designer Karen Nepacena. “It acts as the jewelry of a space, similar to finishing off a fabulous outfit with the perfect pair of earrings.”
Of course, some of the more sculptural, distinct lighting options can be expensive—but there are budget-friendly options too. Brands like West Elm and CB2 have pieces that retail for less than $400. “When searching for affordable lighting, look for designs that have organic shapes, which can mimic a piece of artwork or a sculpture,” she adds. “Also, some finishes, like brass, never go out of style, so turn to designs made with materials that have stood the test of time.”
Take It Outside
Nowadays, outdoor spaces are all-important, and you can light them without overspending. “I recommend adding string lights, lanterns, or other accent lights to the ceiling to create instant ambiance at a reasonable price point,” says Jessica Shaw, director of interior design at The Turett Collaborative. “They can be strung along vertical walls or corners to illuminate the space without taking up too much real estate.”
Showcase Your Art
You can also get picture lamps at an approachable price point—Pooky’s rechargeable options start at just $95. “These are great for dark corners or adding functional yet decorative lighting,” says Plant. “They’re also easy to install, as they don’t require wiring, so there’s no need to hire an electrician.”
Shop Vintage
Thrifting is always a good idea, but it’s especially wise if you’re on the hunt for inexpensive lighting. “Update doesn’t necessarily mean buying new, and there are so many affordable vintage finds,” says Rebekah Zaveloff, cofounder and creative director of Imparfait Design Studio. “Estate sales and flea markets are also great places to shop, and I love to scour Etsy and Chairish for one-of-a-kind pieces.”
These vintage touches will add more personality to your space, too. “I love to use little crystal lamps on bars and coffee stations to create a small moment within a larger space,” she adds.
