The lack of boron in the soil can cause fruit bursting in tomatoes. To address this, mix 20 to 25 kg of boron into the soil and prepare a solution of 0.25% borax in 100-120 litres of water, which should be sprayed on tomato plants
Although tomatoes are cultivated three times a year, the taste of tomatoes grown in the winter season is unique. Tomatoes are typically cultivated in May-June, September-October, and January-February. There is a constant demand for tomatoes in the market, which ensures that farmers receive good prices for their yields.
However, farmers often face challenges with the tomato crop, particularly with its rapid growth. A significant problem is fruit bursting during the colder months, which can cause a drastic decline in production.
Shahjahanpur District Horticulture Officer Dr Puneet Kumar Pathak stated that fruit bursting is a common issue in tomatoes, leading to substantial losses in yield. However, if farmers follow certain practices, this problem can be avoided.
This issue can arise due to drought or a lack of boron, and it is often exacerbated when tomatoes are cultivated in barren soil. While bad weather affects all crops, adverse conditions have a more significant impact on tomatoes. Sudden rain following a drought can lead to fruit bursting.
To minimise the loss, farmers should continue to irrigate tomatoes regularly during drought conditions to reduce the risk of fruit bursting after rain. It is essential to ensure the soil has the necessary nutrients for good crop production.
The lack of boron in the soil can also cause fruit bursting in tomatoes. To address this, mix 20 to 25 kg of boron into the soil and prepare a solution of 0.25% borax in 100-120 litres of water, which should be sprayed on tomato plants. This can prevent the problem of fruit bursting.
Borax can be sprayed two to three times, especially when the tomato plants are in the fruit formation stage.
Avoid cultivating tomatoes on barren soil. While tomatoes can generally be grown in various types of land, cultivating them in barren soil can cause several problems, particularly fruit bursting. Therefore, it is important to avoid planting tomatoes in barren soil.
