Mumbai has been set alight by Coldplay’s long-awaited return, with the band kicking off their Music of the Spheres tour at DY Patil Stadium over the weekend. It’s been nine years since their last performance in India, and fans were more than ready to soak up the magic.
However, it wasn’t just the music that stole the show—Chris Martin’s unexpected apology to Indian fans became the talk of the town.
During Sunday’s high-energy performance, Martin took a moment to reflect on the historical ties between India and Britain. Addressing the crowd, he said:
“This is our forth visit to India, and the second time to play. First time we played a long show and we could not have asked for a better audience. Thank you for coming today everybody.”
But it was his next words that really got the crowd buzzing:
“It is amazing to us that you welcome us even though we are from Great Britain. Thank you for forgiving us for all of the bad things that Great Britain has done.”
The audience erupted in cheers and laughter, with the moment quickly making waves on social media.
Many found Martin’s humble acknowledgment refreshing, with one fan commenting, “Humbling for him to come here and say that. Thank you for being human.” Another quipped, “Well, at least he did, unlike the British monarchy and governments.”
Martin wasn’t in Mumbai alone—he arrived last Thursday with his actor-girlfriend Dakota Johnson, and the two have been fully embracing the city’s culture.
From strolling along Marine Drive to seeking blessings at the Siddhivinayak Temple—where Dakota was spotted alongside actors Sonali Bendre and Gayatri Joshi—the couple has been making the most of their time in India.
We love to see them not just touring the country but actually immersing themselves in the experience—from its music to its history to its spirituality.
Where to Catch Coldplay Next
For Mumbai fans, the final Coldplay show in the city is set for Monday, January 21 before the band moves on to Ahmedabad, where they will perform on January 25 and 26 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
If the Mumbai leg is anything to go by, Coldplay’s India tour is shaping up to be a historic one—both musically and politically.
