Sean “Diddy” Combs, whose life is currently at the edge of falling, is right now facing serious accusations after a deadly incident at a charity event in New York City that left nine teenagers dead.
The controversial music mogul is accused of lying about what really happened during the chaos that led to the tragedy.
While Diddy sits in jail waiting for his trial date under some serious charges, his past controversies are coming back into the spotlight, making his ongoing legal battle even worse.
The lawsuit from Cassie Ventura is said to be his biggest scandal till this date, but it all goes back over 30 years to his first major public controversy.
In early days of his career, Diddy co-hosted a charity basketball game at NYC’s City College that ended in a deadly stampede.
While he compensated all those victims, he never apologised for the tragedy.
The tragic event happened on December 28, 1991, when the rapper was working at Uptown Records and he teamed up with rapper Heavy D to organize a charity basketball game. However, things went quickly wrong and everything got massy.
The gym, which could hold 2,730 people, was packed with over 5,000 attendees, with even more people left outside, unable to get in. The overcrowding led to chaos and a deadly stampede.
Fans, who were desperate to see the game, rushed into the area and got stuck on a staircase. The doors opened the wrong way, causing a crowd to pile up. In the chaos, 29 people and mostly teens were crushed and died.
Despite this, Diddy never issued a formal apology. In a documentary, Jason Swain, who lost his brother in the stampede, shared his thoughts:
“All families settled and were given a settlement amount. We got $40,000 from Sean Combs directly. But he never owned up to it, never just said, ‘I apologize.’
“There’s a clip of him saying that it wasn’t overbooked. … That’s a blatant lie. His image is important to him. The lies go back to City College.”
