I bought my first Shark Steam Mop in the 1990s; I had two little boys, two rabbits, and a dog that left challenging messes throughout the house. I loved it and used it for many years, and when it finally died I was delighted with the upgraded newer models because they had slimmer, more mobile heads to clean in tight spaces.
Here, I’ll share my best advice on using a Shark Steam Mop and tips for taking care of this steam mop to get the best performance.
What Is a Steam Mop?
A steam mop is an electrical appliance with a water reservoir, a heating element, and a microfiber cleaning head. The water in the reservoir is heated to around 248ºF and steam is dispersed through nozzles into the mop head. The steam helps loosen and remove dirt, dust, and bacteria from surfaces.
As with traditional mops, there are several brands and styles of steam mops on the market. When selecting a Shark steam mop or another brand, consider your needs and budget and look for these features.
- Cord length: Most cords are around 20 to 25 feet and will not cover a large open space. Using an extension cord is not recommended with a high-wattage appliance like a steam mop.
- Steam control: To prevent overheating surfaces, a steam control that monitors the amount of steam delivered is a must.
- Maneuverability: The size and swivel range of the head should be considered for cleaning corners and tight spaces.
- Accessories: If you have grouted flooring, an attachable grout cleaning tool is important.

How to Use a Shark Steam Mop
- Assemble the mop. To assemble the basic Shark Steam Mop, align the mop handle and pole until they click securely in place. Insert this into the mop body and head. Attach the mop pad to the mop head.
- Fill the water tank. Remove the water tank from the body of the mop, unscrew the cap, and fill it with cool water. Replace the cap and reattach the tank to the body of the mop, ensuring that it clicks into place.
- Connect to power. Connect the power cord to an electrical outlet and make sure the power indicator is lit. Wait 30 seconds for the water to heat.
- Activate steam. After 30 seconds, pump the handle a few times in a downward motion to prime the mop and activate the steam. This pumping action will release steam as you mop and allows you to customize the amount of steam you want.
- Begin mopping. Begin mopping with a forward and backward motion. The natural motion of mopping will produce steam. Do not leave the mop in one spot for too long or the flooring may be damaged. When the water tank is empty, the mop will stop producing steam. Always unplug the mop before removing and refilling the water tank.
- Allow to cool before storing. When you are finished, lock the mop in an upright position and allow it to cool. Remove the cleaning pad and empty the water tank before storing it upright.
How to Care for a Shark Steam Mop
- The mop pad should be cleaned after every use. While it can be machine-washed, you can also clean it by hand in hot soapy water. Do not use chlorine bleach or fabric softeners that may damage or leave a residue on the pads that affects cleaning performance and absorbency.
- Replace the cleaning pads when the fibers begin to break down or when you notice that increased effort is needed to push or pull the mop. If used regularly, most pads last about four months.
- Tap water, especially in areas with hard water, can cause problems in a steam mop. Using distilled water is the best choice to prevent mineral buildup that clogs the steam vents.
- Cleaning solutions, vinegar, scented perfumes, oils, or any other chemicals should not be added to the water tank because they can damage the mop and make it unsafe to use.
- The body of the steam mop should be cleaned with a damp microfiber cloth only when the appliance is unplugged. Do not submerge in water or use harsh cleaners.
- Always use and store the mop in an upright position. It should be used on flat, horizontal surfaces. Do not attempt to use the mop on walls, windows, or any vertical surfaces.
