There’s an active recall on approximately 349,500 kitchen scales sold online through Amazon, Walmart and other retailers, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This is due to an ingestion hazard.
The kitchen scales affected are Greater Goods Digital Kitchen Scales in colors gray, black, blue, green, pink, red, silver and white. The scales were packaged with two lithium CR3032 coin batteries, one pre-installed and one spare battery. They were sold online nationwide through Amazon, Walmart and the Greater Goods website for about $10.
The scales were recalled because the spare battery was not in child-resistant packaging and the battery door on the scale did not meet the requirements of Reese’s Law, which was passed in 2022. Your scale may be part of this recall if it does not have a battery door that is secured with a screw. To correct this, Greater Goods is offering free replacement doors for customers whose scales are affected. The scales’ packaging also lacked the standard warning message for items using a coin battery.
“The recalled scales also do not have the required warnings,” the CPSC recall states. “When button cell or coin batteries are swallowed, the ingested batteries can cause serious injuries, internal chemical burns and death.”
Check your kitchen scale immediately, and if it matches the recall information, either return it or request a more secure battery door. To receive a replacement door, contact Greater Goods by calling toll-free at 866-991-0397 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday, emailing at recall@greatergoods.com or visiting their recall website for more information.
