A toaster oven is one of those kitchen appliances that we often rely on day in and day out. It’s quick, convenient, and surprisingly versatile. But while we may use it frequently for everything from toasting bagels to roasting veggies, when was the last time you gave your toaster oven a proper cleaning? Just like any other appliance, your toaster oven needs a little TLC to stay in top working condition. How to clean a toaster oven doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal. With the right tools and a simple cleaning routine, you can keep it sparkling and ensure it lasts for years to come.
How Often Should You Clean Your Toaster Oven?
“To keep your toaster oven fresh, create an easy-to-follow system you can implement once a week,” recommends professional organizer Kimberly Cheeseman. If you use it daily (like for reheating leftovers or making quick meals), aim to clean it more often. If you use it less frequently, once every couple of weeks might be sufficient. Once a month, be sure to give it a complete and deep clean, taking removable pieces out to wash and focusing on those nooks and crannies.
In between monthly cleanings, you should regularly wipe down the interior and crumb tray after use. This prevents buildup and makes it easier to keep your toaster oven clean. “To make daily clean-up easier, try using foil or toaster oven-safe mats on the crumb tray to catch drips,” says Marie Dreyer, CEO and founder of Organize With Marie. “However, ensure they’re properly sized and placed so they don’t cover vents or heating elements.”

How to Clean Your Toaster Oven
“A clean toaster oven works quicker, smells better, and won’t set off the smoke alarm mid-pizza reheat,” says Cheeseman. To properly clean your toaster oven, follow the instructions below. Not only will this help maintain the efficiency of the appliance, but it’ll also prevent any lingering smells or food debris from building up.
1. Unplug the Toaster Oven
“The first step to cleaning your toaster oven is to make sure it’s unplugged and cool to avoid burns or damage,” says Dreyer. It’s an important safety precaution, especially when dealing with the interior and heating elements, ensuring that you won’t accidentally activate the appliance while cleaning it.
2. Shake Out the Crumbs
Carefully dump the crumbs from the appliance and its crumb tray into the trash. You can also use a small brush to remove any stubborn crumbs that might be stuck.
3. Soak Removable Parts
Slide out the toaster oven’s removable parts like cooking racks and crumb trays. Using mild dish soap, wash in warm, soapy water, allowing them to soak if necessary. (Check the manufacturer’s instructions before attempting to clean these parts in a dishwasher.)
4. Scrub Stuck-On Debris
“Use a non-abrasive sponge or soft brush to remove any stuck-on food on racks and crumb trays,” says Dreyer. “Avoid steel wool or highly abrasive scrubbers that can scratch surfaces.”
5. Clean the Interior Walls
To clean food splatters from the interior walls of your toaster oven, “use a microfiber or soft cloth dampened with a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap,” instructs Dreyer.
“Use a baking soda paste for stubborn stains,” adds Cheeseman. Mix baking soda and water and apply to the stains and let sit. Afterwards, the residue should easily wipe away with a damp cloth.
“Do not apply any cleaning solution directly onto the heating elements,” warns Dreyer. “If needed, gently wipe them with a soft, damp cloth—ensuring they are completely dry before reassembly.
6. Wipe Down the Exterior
Use a damp cloth or sponge with a little dish soap to wipe down the machine’s exterior. For stainless steel exteriors, you can use a cleaner specifically designed for stainless steel to keep it shiny and streak-free. For nonstick or enamel surfaces, a gentle dish soap solution will take care of splatters, and spills. “Dry thoroughly to prevent water spots,” says Dreyer.
7. Clean the Door
The door of your toaster oven can be cleaned with a typical glass cleaner. “A vinegar-water solution will also cut grease on the glass door,” says Cheeseman. Wipe dry to prevent streaks.
8. Rinse, Dry, and Reassemble
Rinse and dry trays and removable pieces thoroughly (as well as the interior walls) before reinserting them back into the toaster oven. “Run on low heat briefly to ensure any moisture or odors are gone,” says Dreyer.
With regular maintenance and these easy tips, your toaster oven will stay looking and performing like new. “An organized, clean appliance means better-tasting food and a stress-free kitchen,” Cheeseman says. So, go ahead and give it a little love, and your toaster oven will continue to serve you delicious meals for years to come.
