Drinking an appropriate amount of water regularly is essential for good health. Experts advise adults to drink 2-3 litres of water daily. Although, one can consume water at any time of the day, according to Ayurveda, drinking water at certain times can affect one’s health.
Best Times To Drink Water For Good Health
Ayurvedacharya Sarvesh Kumar says that many people have the habit of drinking water while eating. This habit has a bad effect on digestion and can lead to many stomach-related problems.
According to the expert, Ayurveda mentions the occurrence of many ailments due to drinking water while eating or immediately after eating. This is the reason why Ayurveda recommends drinking water at least one hour before eating or within one or two hours after eating.
Disadvantages Of Drinking Water While Eating
- Obesity problems: Drinking water while eating weakens the digestive power and increases obesity. If our stomach is not healthy then it is impossible for the body to remain healthy. Therefore, water should not be drunk while eating.
- Gas and heartburn: Water drunk while eating is absorbed by the surface of the stomach. This process of absorbing water continues until the fluid required for digestion becomes thick. In such a situation, gastric juice starts forming to digest the food, due to which indigestion, gas and heartburn may occur.
- Acidity problem: Drinking water immediately after eating destroys the energy called gastric fire of the stomach, which digest the food. Therefore, drinking water immediately after eating would deter proper digestion of food. Problems like gas and acidity can occur due to the rotting of the undigested food in the stomach.
Drink Water When Needed
Ayurvedacharya Dr Sarvesh Kumar says that drinking water during meals can be harmful to health and affect digestion. But when the food is too spicy, one can drink a few sips of water to soothe the heat of the spice or cleanse their palate. Apart from this, properly chewing food is also good for digestion.
