Water hyacinth, or Jalkumbhi, a common sight in rivers and ponds, is often labelled a menace. Research indicates that its presence threatens aquatic life by depleting oxygen levels, consequently increasing water pollution.
Which means, water bodies overrun by water hyacinth suffer from oxygen deficiency, rendering them uninhabitable for marine life.
‘Terror of Bengal’
The plant was first introduced in West Bengal, earning it the name ‘Terror of Bengal’. While its green leaves floating on water surfaces are a familiar sight, its numerous benefits may come as a surprise.

Water hyacinth leaves possess antifungal, antibacterial, anti-ageing, and anti-cancer properties, alongside a wealth of essential nutrients beneficial to health.
Its consumption is believed to aid in treating serious conditions such as high blood pressure, cancer, arthritis, bronchitis, diuresis, odontalgia, and scurvy.
