Priyanka Chopra’s brother Siddharth Chopra recently married actress Neelam Upadhyaya at a grand wedding in Mumbai. Apart from Priyanka Chopra, her husband Nick Jonas, daughter Malti and cousin Parineeti Chopra were also seen at the wedding. Priyanka Chopra shared pictures of all wedding ceremonies on Instagram, including photos of a traditional and fun haldi ceremony.
Unfortunately, Neelam Upadhyaya suffered from a skin allergy after her haldi ritual. She spoke about the skin allergy on her Instagram post, stating that the reaction on her skin may be due to long exposure to sun after applying turmeric.
Neelam shared a post in her Instagram story, in which she wrote, “What is happening? I think this is the reaction of turmeric paste due to exposure to sun. However, I did a patch test a few days before the turmeric ceremony and everything was fine.” She shared the picture of the allergy visible on her neck and shoulder.
Turmeric does not suit every skin. Brides often face problems like skin allergy after their haldi ceremony. Bollywood actress Kriti Kharbanda, who got married a year ago, used multani mitti instead of turmeric in her haldi ceremony.
Turmeric And Sunlight
Turmeric contains a bioactive compound called curcumin, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. While turmeric is applied on the skin for its brightening and healing effects, it can sometimes cause photosensitivity, making the skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays.
Individuals may experience increased sensitivity to UV rays, causing skin redness, irritation, or mild sunburn. Sometimes, sun exposure after applying turmeric can also cause dark spots, especially in individuals with sensitive or melanin-rich skin.
How To Safely Apply Turmeric To The Skin?
- It is very important to do a patch test before applying turmeric on the skin. You can do a patch test on the skin behind the ear or on the hand and wait for 24 hours to ensure that there is no reaction or allergy.
- To avoid sunlight, apply turmeric masks or treatments at night.
- If using turmeric during the day, always apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or more to avoid any negative reactions.
- Mixing turmeric with yoghurt, honey or aloe vera can minimise its effect and also reduce irritation.
