While getting dressed this morning, I was having an internal debate with myself. It had just snowed, so my mind immediately went to, well, footwear. It was slippery and slushy out, so obviously, heels weren’t ideal, but I concluded that my outfit would look so much better with, well, heels. In the end, I decided I didn’t want to deal with a wobbly stiletto or risk getting stuck in a subway grate (lol), so I went with chunky combat boots. But, after seeing model Suki Waterhouse’s latest shoes, I realized I might no longer have to worry about the latter.

The supermodel was photographed outside of the Michael Kors show during New York Fashion Week, wearing a strapless, ultra short-short romper that gave her legs for days (!!!). Given the time of year, showing so much leg might seem unreasonable to some people, but for the sake of fashion, risks have to be taken. However, she, quite literally, warmed up the look with a fuzzy black jacket that gave winter, grounding the all-black look with black pointed-toe heels. But, they weren’t just any heels. They were flared heels. Hear me out.

Flare jeans are trending, so honestly, it makes sense that flare heels are in for big things this spring and summer. And if you’re confused by the concept, don’t be—it’s super simple. Just like the way flare jeans have a kicked-out hem, imagine a heel with a pyramid-like, kicked out shape at the base. Basically, it’s the total opposite of a pencil-thin silhouette, offering a heel with a more architectural shape that’s eye-catching, but also super-functional.
This takes me back to my initial debate of heels or no heels per those aforementioned subway grate dangers. With a flare heel, which has a wider base, I don’t have to worry about my pencil-thin heel getting stuck anywhere, really. Plus, the pyramid-like base covers more surface area, which provides a sturdier base on which to walk. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? I think so, and that’s why I’m definitely adding flare heels to my footwear collection, stat.
